Imagine this.
You are standing under the Northern Lights.
You take a deep breath. Listen carefully. The natural silence around you. Bonfire. Cold air through your nose. The sound of the wind from the trees. The sounds of the ocean.
If you pay a little more attention,
you may hear the sound of the Northern Lights.
Close your eyes. Breathe.
Can you feel it?
I am Levi. Indigenous.
I'm a Sámi, we are the indigenous people in Norway.
I grew up in a small Sámi village named Musken, located north of the arctic circle. Since I was a little kid I have been living under the northern lights, and my respect for the northern lights has continued through my life.
In my village, the elders used to tell us kids with a strong voice “never wave to the northern lights, the northern light will come to you and take you away!”
This has followed me all my life. Today I know why...
I will give you a guided tour with storytelling, hopefully beautiful weather and an amazing view, and together we will be watching the northern lights. Feeling close to our common Nature and wilderness.
We are the people from the nature, the Sámis, and want to show you our special bond to it.
Respect the nature
The Sámi people have a special connection to the Nature and the northern lights. With deep respect we conduct ourselves when we are out in the forest.
We always ask the spirits in the Nature for permission to make a bonfire, so we can enjoy the moment in respect and peace for a while. When we leave the place, we make sure we leave it in the same condition it was before we were there.
Our story
The old Sámi mythology thought the Sámi people that the spirits of the ancestors are in the northern light, and we also believe that the northern light can see us and hear us.
Aurora keeps an eye on you!
So, you must behave when you are under the northern light. We teach the children to respect Nature, and one of the things we teach them in young age, is not wave to the northern light.
If you tease the northern light, it will start to move and come and take your soul away.
Do you want me to tell our story?
“My goal is always to make you feel grateful and be happy for what we have in life. Respect eachother, and go to sleep every night with a good feeling.”
